Thanks for visiting the 2007 Schenectady-Nijkerk Voyage of Discovery site.
Follow us on our trip up the Hudson!

In 1609, English captain Henry Hudson was commissioned by the Dutch East India Company to discover a new northerly route to the Spice Islands. Assigned command of the Dutch jaght Halve Maen, Captain Hudson led his mixed crew of Dutch and English sailors to explore the estuary now known as the Hudson River. Their discoveries on this voyage would soon lead to the establishment of the New Netherland Colony. In 1662, within that colony, the city of Schenectady was founded by Arent van Curler, a native of Nijkerk in the Netherlands.

Nearly 350 years later, the bond between the sister cities of Schenectady and Nijkerk remains vibrant. As part of the ongoing youth exchange program between Schenectady and Nijkerk, the Replica Ship Half Moon is proud to play host to a mixed group of Dutch and American student sailors. Join us as our cultures mingle and we learn more about our shared history.

Latest Update (8/3): Daily log for July 25.

The Daily Log is our way of letting you know each day's events. We'll be updating from shipboard at least once a day, so please check back regularly -- there's a lot to see!

Stop by the Crew page to meet our Dutch and American student sailors, as well as the rest of the crew of the Half Moon.

The Learning page is where we'll be posting information about what we learn on the river. Check back each day to see as our knowledge expands.

If you'd like to talk to us on shipboard, send us an email at ship@halfmoon.mus.ny.us. Please keep the email messages small (maximum 100 kb, less is better) because it takes us a long time to download.

For information about our ship, including the our recent rebuild project and our past Voyages of Discovery, please visit the rest of the Half Moon's Website.
