2008 Schedule

Below we present a log of the Replica Ship Half Moon's major events and activites in 2008.

April Events

April 11-13: Work Weekend. The Half Moon left its Winter Berth at King Marine in Verplanck, NY.

May Events

May 2-8: Spring Voyage of Discovery. Middle school students from Albany and Rensselaer boarded the Half Moon on Friday, May 2 in Yonkers, NY, and arrived at noon on Thursday, May 8th in Albany, NY.

May 9: Set Up for Tours. Volunteers spent the afternoon dockside preparing the Half Moon's historical exhibits for public and school tours.

May 10-11 & 17-18: Public Tours. The Half Moon was open to the public for tours in Albany, NY on Saturdays and Sundays.

May 12-16 & 19: School Tours. From Monday through Friday, the Half Moon was available for tours to pre-scheduled school groups from throughout the greater Capital Region.

May 21: Legislator's Voyage. Legislators from the New York State Assembly boarded the ship for a special one-hour sail off the Albany and Rensselaer waterfronts.

May 22: Prepare for Departure. Volunteers spent the afternoon unloading the Half Moon's historical exhibits and preparing for the next day's voyage.

May 23: Athens Voyage. The Half Moon departed Albany for Athens, NY. Volunteers enjoyed a full day of brisk sailing.

May 30-June 1: School for the Sailor. The Half Moon hosted an intensive, weekend-long sail training course for historical re-enactors in Athens, NY.

June Events

June 2-June 19: Upgrade Program. The Half Moon remained docked at Peckham Materials in Athens, NY undergoing standard maintenance. During this period our volunteers made steady progress with renewing the spars and rigging on the ship, preparing the transom for new paint, and making engineering changes in the engine room. 

June 20-June 23: Athens-New London Shakedown. The Half Moon traveled from Athens, NY through Long Island Sound to New London, CT in preparation for a variety of programs to be held on the Connecticut River.

June 27-July 3: 2008 Fresh River Voyage of Discovery. In association with Goodwin College, our student crew boarded the Half Moon on Friday, June 27, at New London, CT, and arrived at the Riverside Campus of Goodwin College in East Hartford, CT at midday on Thursday, July 3.

July Events

July 5-6: Public Tours. The Half Moon was open for public tours in East Hartford, CT. More than 1,000 visitors toured our historic displays at the Goodwin College Riverside Campus.

July 7-11: Dockside Programs. The Half Moon remained in East Hartford, CT, conducting dockside programs.

July 12-July 17: East Hartford-Athens Shakedown. The Half Moon departed from East Hartford, CT, and traveled to Athens, NY to return to scheduled maintenance and upgrades.

August Events

August 4-6: Athens-Staten Island Voyage. The Half Moon traveled from Peckham Materials in Athens, NY, to Caddell Shipyard on Staten Island, NY, for scheduled maintenance.

August 7-14: Haul Out. The Half Moon entered drydock at Caddell Shipyard on Staten Island for an intensive and productive period of hull maintenance.

August 15-17: Staten Island-Athens Shakedown. Our volunteer crew once again returned the ship to our hosts at Peckham Materials in Athens, NY while testing the ship's new improvements.

September Events

September 7-19: Fall 2008 Voyage of Discovery. Students from the greater Capital Region once again boarded the Half Moon in Verplanck, NY for our annual Voyage of Discovery recreating Henry Hudson's original expedition up the "North River." The Half Moon arrived in Albany, NY at noon on the 19th.

September 20-21 & 27-28: Albany Public Tours. The Half Moon was open for public tours on weekends in Albany, NY.

September 22-25 & September 29-30: Albany School Tours. From Monday through Friday, the Half Moon was available for tours to pre-scheduled school groups from throughout the greater Capital Region.

October Events

October 1-3 & October 6-7: Albany School Tours. The final days for Half Moon school tours in Albany, NY for the 2008 season.

October 4-5: Albany Public Tours. The final weekend of Half Moon public tours in Albany, NY for the 2008 season.

October 7: Hudson River Snapshot Day. The Half Moon once again participated in Hudson River Snapshot Day (external link). In Albany, Capital Region students gathered at the Corning Preserve to spend the day conducting environmental studies under the guidance of our crew.

October 9: Athens-Catskill Voyage. Volunteers joined us for a beautiful day of sailing in preparation for the next day's Voyage of Discovery.

October 10-17: 2008 Masters Voyage of Discovery. Students from the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY boarded the Half Moon in Catskill and disembarked in Yonkers.

October 18-19 & 25-26: Yonkers Half Moon Fest/Public Tours. The Half Moon was open for public tours on Saturdays and Sundays in Yonkers, NY. In addition, the ship was the centerpiece of Half Moon fest, which included a range of public activities centered on the Yonkers Waterfront.

October 20-24 & 27-31: Yonkers School Tours. From Monday through Friday, the Half Moon was available for tours to pre-scheduled school groups from throughout Yonkers and Westchester County.

November Events

November 1: Yonkers-Newburgh Voyage. Volunteer crew came aboard for a daylong trip to transport the Half Moon from Yonkers to Newburgh.

November 3-7: Newburgh School Tours. From Monday through Friday, the Half Moon was available for tours to pre-scheduled school groups in Newburgh, NY and the surrounding region. Area docents helped guide these tours.

November 8-9: Newburgh Public Tours. The Half Moon was open for public tours on Saturday and Sunday in Newburgh, NY. Area docents helped guide these tours.

November 10-11: Winter Berth Voyage. Volunteer crew joined us for the Half Moon's final voyage of the 2008 season. On this trip, we moved the ship from Newburgh to Albany, where the Half Moon was pulled from the water to spend the winter undergoing an extensive program of maintenance and material upgrades in preparation for the 2009 Quadricentennial.
