Move your mouse over the portraits of our new crew members to see them receiving their official crew shirts upon completing their first Voyage of Discovery.

Captain William Reynolds

Captain William Reynolds is the Director of the New Netherland Museum and Captain of the replica ship Half Moon. He enjoys working with the student crew on these Voyages of Discovery.

Crewmember Dan Barton

Captain Dan Barton serves as first mate and engineer. He is a licensed captain and former member of the Coast Guard who served on the Tamaroa, a ship made famous for its rescue operations during the events detailed in the book and film The Perfect Storm. He has volunteered on the Half Moon since 1994, making him the longest continuously serving volunteer in the ship's history. Mr. Barton likes to make up names for all the crew members.

Crewmember Rosemary Barton

Mrs. Rosemary Barton's culinary skills as cook on the Half Moon are beyond compare. She has been the chief cook & bottle washer (not to mention crew confidante) on the Half Moon for eleven years, unfailingly preparing impeccable meals for two dozen hungry crewmembers within the sharply limited time, space, and resources of a ship's galley.

Captain Erik Berg, before and after his first voyage on the Half Moon.

Captain Erik Berg is a professional sailor from the Netherlands. During his brief time in America, he has has greatly enjoyed working in Captain Reynolds' barn, helping complete the construction of a replica 17th-century sloep (a small landing vessel). After his voyage on the Half Moon, he will return to the Netherlands to sail on a 60-meter Dutch boat, the Swan fan Makkum.

Three and a half weeks before this Voyage of Discovery began, Erik Berg earned his captain's license from the Enkhuizen Zeevaart School.

Among his hobbies, Captain Berg enjoys kite flying, surfing, and tennis.

Crewmember Daniel Dawson, before and after his first voyage on the Half Moon.

Mr. Daniel Scott Dawson, age 24, is enjoying his first Voyage of Discovery with the Half Moon. A professional painter and handyman, he has recently devoted countless hours to ship's maintenance and restoring the Half Moon to its former glory after it was cosmetically "aged" for a film shoot last year. When not sailing, he is an avid skier & fisherman, and he enjoys hiking, billiards, darts, and watching baseball.

Crewmember Virginia Farrel

Ms. Virginia Farrell teaches the 7th and 8th graders at Rensselaer Middle High School. She has been sailing with the Half Moon since 2000. This is her ninth Voyage of Discovery, and she looks forward to another wonderful adventure.

Crewmember Steve Linehan

Mr. Steve Linehan is a Social Studies teacher for grades 7-8 at Philip Livingston Magnet Academy. This is his 23rd year working in the Albany City School District. Mr. Linehan is the developer of our 7th-grade curriculum, and has been sailing with the Half Moon since the inception of the Voyage of Discovery project in 1998.

Crewmember John Mangrum

Mr. John Mangrum is a published roleplaying game designer. Originally from Philadelphia, he moved to Albany in 1993 and, last year, finally found his way onto the decks of the Half Moon. Known as the fellow who "came to take a tour and never left," he has now been sailing with the Half Moon for nearly a year. Mr. Mangrum is the current editor of the Half Moon's newsletter, the New Netherland News, and is in charge of updating this Voyage of Discovery website while the ship is underway.

Crewmember Sean McDonald, before and after his first voyage on the Half Moon.

Mr. Sean McDonald is a math teacher at Oneida Middle School. This is his first Voyage of Discovery onboard the Half Moon. He considers this an incredible experience that students and adults will always remember.

Captain Bill Washington, before and after his first voyage on the Half Moon.

Captain Bill Washington is a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain. While this is his first trip on the Half Moon, he has been on the water most of his life. A native New Yorker, he now hails from the Washington D.C. area. He can normally be found running charter yachts, tour boats and private yachts. He is president of the Potomac River Pilots Association, member of the Chesapeake Area Professional Captain's Association, and works with the National Maritime Heritage Foundation. He has worked with hundreds of children through the N.M.H.F., teaching about life at sea in the age of sail.

His most recent accomplishment is the launch of a new website: blackmariners.com (external link). The site tells the history of the black mariner from early Africa to contemporary sailors.

Crewmember Steve Weisse

Mr. Steve Weisse is the father of a former student crewmember on a Voyage of Discovery who has graduated to serving as a crew member on the Half Moon himself. A professional musician, he often uses his trumpet to serenade the crew in the evening and to act as a "wake-up facilitation engineer" each morning. This is Mr. Weisse's second Voyage of Discovery with the Half Moon.
