With the channels gone, the crew sets out to remove the sections of the wales that once ran between the channels and the hull. Our primary intent is to replace them with fresh wood, just like the channels they anchor, but this also presents us with an opportunity to inspect the hull planking beneath.

It's delicate work; we want to remove the wales entirely, without marring the wood above, below, or behind them. Danny Dawson devotes several days to the task.
