William Reynolds, Ship's Captain

William Reynolds: Ship's Captain

Captain William Reynolds has been captain of the Half Moon and Director of the New Netherland Museum since 1998. Before coming to the Half Moon, he captained numerous seagoing vessels, both historical and industrial. His background also includes training and work in the environmental sciences. He currently lives with his family in Selkirk, NY, and is looking forward to seeing the new student crew meet the challenges this Voyage of Discovery places before them.

Bob Hansen

Bob Hansen: First Mate

Ship's mate Bob Hansen started sailing on the Hudson on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater; later, on two engineless sloops. Since the 1990s, he has served as a volunteer and mate on the schooners Spirit of Massachuesetts and Ernestina.

When not sailing, he describes himself as a "bureaucrat" with the New York State government.

Roxanne Wegman

Roxanne Wegman: Cook

Roxanne Wegman is a Voyage of Discovery alumna who sailed on the Half Moon in 2000. She graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in 2005. She attended United States Military Academy at West Point for two and a half years. She decided to take two years off from the Army to do Christian missionary work in Taiwan. While planning and raising money for her mission, she had the opportunity to sail on the Half Moon as a steward/cook. Her responsibility is to feed the crew and maintain the galley.

Her hobbies include running cross country and track, Shakespearean drama, American history, bluegrass music, singing, and playing violin.

Joe Bamberger

Joe Bamberger: Educator/Seaman

Joe Bamberger is a geologist, educator, history buff and former US Naval Officer. This father of three young children is a native of the capital region, having lived on both sides of the Hudson River. He graduated from Maine Maritime Academy and the University of Albany. A new crew member in 2007, he's visited 22 countries around the world to date.

Sky Colley

Sky Colley: Carpenter/Seaman

Sky Colley has been living in Mexico for the last couple of years, but he's happy to be back on board the Half Moon for another Voyage of Discovery.

Daniel Scott Dawson

Daniel Scott Dawson: Painter/Seaman

Mr. Dawson is a professional handyman/painter who spent most of this past summer assisting with major upgrade projects on the Half Moon. This is Mr. Dawson's fifth Voyage of Discovery. When not working on the Half Moon, Mr. Dawson is an avid fisherman and wilderness explorer, and he also enjoys skiing, billiards, the New York Yankees, and listening to and collecting live music.

Kris Fountain

Kris Fountain: Educator

Kristina Fountain is a sixth grade English teacher from Rensselaer Middle High School. This is Mrs. Fountain's fourth Voyage of Discovery on the Half Moon.

Laurie Hausler

Laurie Hausler: Educator

Mrs. Hausler is a sixth grade Special Education teacher at Rensselaer Middle High School. This is her second Voyage of Discovery on the Half Moon.

Mary Ellen Jacobs

Mary Ellen Jacobs: Science Officer

Mary Ellen Jacobs has an undergraduate degree in history and a Ph.D. in molecular biology & biochemistry. She is currently a researcher at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, CT. She is serving as science officer on this Voyage of Discovery, during which she hopes to introduce students to the biology of the Hudson River, as well as the history of the Henry Hudson & his crew on their 1609 voyage along the river that would bear his name.

John W. Mangrum

John W. Mangrum: Chronicler

Originally hailing from the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, John W. Mangrum holds one of the most anachronistic positions the crew of a 17th-century wooden sailing ship could imagine: the Half Moon's webmaster. Seldom seen in front of the camera, he oversses the daily updates to this website during our voyages. A former roleplaying game designer, Mr. Mangrum is now enjoying his fourth year of voyages aboard the Half Moon. What started as a simple, impromptu dockside tour of the ship has since turned into a life of adventure.

Dan Morency

Dan Morency: Educator

Dan Morency teaches 7th grade Social Studies at Myers Middle School. This is his second Voyage of Discovery. He looks forward to the northern journey on the river.

Jennifer O'Leary

Jennifer O'Leary: Educator

Jen O'Leary teaches 7th grade writing workshop at Stephen & Harriet Myers Middle School. This is her first Voyage of Discovery and she's excited to learn how to sail.
