Captain William Reynolds

William Reynolds: Ship's Captain

Captain William Reynolds has been captain of the Half Moon and Director of the New Netherland Museum since 1998. Before coming to the Half Moon, he captained numerous seagoing vessels, both historical and industrial. His background also includes training and work in the environmental sciences. He currently lives with his family in Selkirk, NY, and is looking forward to seeing the new student crew meet the challenges this Voyage of Discovery places before them.

Dan Barton

Dan Barton: Mate/Engineer

Captain Dan Barton serves as first mate and engineer. He is a licensed captain and former member of the Coast Guard who served on the Tamaroa, a ship made famous for its rescue operations during the events detailed in the book and film The Perfect Storm. He has volunteered on the Half Moon since 1994, making him the longest continuously serving volunteer in the ship's history. Mr. Barton likes to make up names for all the crew members.

Rosemary Barton

Rosemary Barton: Ship's Cook

Mrs. Rosemary Barton's culinary skills as cook on the Half Moon are beyond compare. This voyage marks her twelfth year as the chief cook & bottle washer (not to mention crew confidante) on the Half Moon, unfailingly preparing impeccable meals for two dozen hungry crewmembers within the sharply limited time, space, and resources of a ship's galley.

Jan Hendrik den Besten

Jan Hendrik den Besten

Jan Hendrik den Besten is from the Netherlands, where he works for a manufacturer of semiconductor technology equipment. Jan Hendrik learned about the Half Moon through Marianne Heins, who sailed with the ship three years ago. He would like to thank Daniel Dawson, Kipp van Aken, Bill Ralston, and the Reynolds family for two nice weeks prior to the voyage itself.

Kathy Fisher: Adult Mentor

Kathy Fisher: Adult Mentor

Kathy Fisher lives in Rotterdam, NY with her husband, Austin, and two children, Claire and Colin. She signed up for what she thought was a Carnival Cruise, but quickly realized that there was a serious miscommunication. Despite the language problem, she is enjoying her trip with the Nijkerk students, family, and crew!

Steve Linehan: Educator

Steve Linehan: Educator

Steve Linehan is a Social Studies teacher for grades 7-8 at Philip Livingston Magnet Academy. The coming fall marks his 26th year working in the Albany City School District. Mr. Linehan is the developer of our 7th-grade curriculum, and has been sailing with the Half Moon since the inception of the Voyage of Discovery project in 1998.

John W. Mangrum

John W. Mangrum: Webmaster

Originally hailing from the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, John W. Mangrum holds one of the most anachronistic positions the crew of a 17th-century wooden sailing ship could imagine: the Half Moon's webmaster. Seldom seen in front of the camera, he oversees the daily updates to this website during our voyages. A former roleplaying game designer, John is now enjoying his fourth year of voyages aboard the Half Moon. What started as a simple, impromptu dockside tour of the ship has since turned into a life of adventure.

Carolyn Niehaus

Carolyn Niehaus

Carolyn Niehaus has been an active member of the Half Moon since 1999 when she started giving tours as a docent through her social studies class. An alumna of the Fall 2000 Voyage of Discovery, as well as other voyages, Carolyn is spending the summer in the office of the Half Moon helping out with administrative tasks. Generally found as part of the so called "Gang of Four," Carolyn is an English major at the University of Rochester where she will return in the fall as a junior.

Grant Prime

Grant Prime: Educator

Grant Prime teaches 5th grade at Taconic Hills Middle School. Mr. Prime has been involved with historical re-enactments for more than thirty years, and has been bringing his enthusiasm to the Half Moon each summer since 1998. He has completed his Master's in Elementary Education, and was a contributor to the New Netherland Museum's 4th- and 7th-grade curriculum materials.

Robert Spuls

Robert Spuls

Robert Spuls is from Gmuiden, the Netherlands. After two weeks of exploring the American Northeast by Amtrak train, he's very pleased to sail with us. As a Dutchman, he feels at home on board this VOC ship, the Halve Maen. It's a wonderful experience to be back in those "Hudson days."
